Booktown Books, Grass Valley

Books, books and more books…  this Saturday is California Independent Bookstore Day and if you’ve got time you can stop by The Book Seller for any one of their events, prizes or snacks, costumes encouraged.

“We’re so lucky to have so many resources for books– from the library to all the used and independent bookstores.  This Saturday is actually independent bookstore day if you want to support the fabulous work they do in our community– buy a book!” says the local author Kim Culbertson, who will be at The Book Seller on Saturday from 11-12.  Check out her California Bookstore Day giveaway on her blog.

Friends of the Nevada County Libraries are holding their monthly used book sale at the Doris Foley Library in downtown Nevada City, if you can’t make it on Saturday between 10am-3pm, all books will be half off on Sunday.

Other local book options include Harmony Books, Tomes, Booktown Books, Mountain House Books and Toad Hall Book Shop.

And because we know that I love giveaways, many thanks to our friends at The Book Seller for putting together a prize package.  The giveaway includeds two autographed books: Beyond the Pale: The Story of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company by Ken Grossman, The Terrible Two by Jory Johns and Mac Barnett and a California Bookstore Day tote.  Post a comment here on why you love books and pass on a suggestion of something to read and I’ll draw the winner on Thursday, May 7th.  Happy to mail the prize if you live outside of the area.

A good book is the perfect way to unwind! My new favorite series is the mystery series by CJ Sansom with Matthew Shardlake as the protagonist, taking place during the reign of Henry VIII. Fantastic mix of history/mystery!

Books can take you to a place you haven’t been or a situation that interests you but you don’t want to visit. I love the puzzle of a good mystery. The most recent book I’ve read was quite a page turner – “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins. Well created characters and a compelling story. The Friends book sale should be fabulous!! Sunday hours are 10-2.

Books reflect and honor the human experience in all its glory and grit! Books inspire me and help me understand myself and this complex world. I highly recommend *Dear Sugar* by Cheryl Strand. I just read a Steinbeck book I hadn’t been familiar with before- *The Pastures of Heaven* and it was fabulous- enthralling and quirky and beautifully written!

Thank you for featuring fabulous stores and having great giveaways!

Books are fabulous. I am still old school and prefer hard print over e-copy.

So educational. Can take you places. Make you think. Have great photos. Write a kind inscription.

How else do you get to simultaneously live several lives than through books! That and they are a great place to escape from the kids… Recommended reading – buying and reading books by your local authors!

Books let you enter someone else’s mind and see the world through their eyes. “Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown was a recent favorite. Account of college rowing in the 1930’s enmeshed with the history of the times.

I love to read! Helps me relax at the end of the day. I highly recommend “The Orphan Master’s Son” by Adam Johnson – it’s got everything.

I love to read, and have enjoyed my bookclub for close to 20 years. Not only do we read books,we also go to movies and plays based on books we’ve read. Just saw “hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet” a wonderful play by CATS, based on book of same name. Fingersmith by Sarah Waters was a real page turner with lots of plot twists.
