Carolines Coffee Roasters, Yesterday and Today

Vintage photos of Carolines Coffee Roasters, Grass Valley Coffee Shop

If you’ve lived in Nevada County for any period of time you’re probably familiar with Carolines Coffee Roasters.  This month the local company celebrates their 31st birthday.  I had a chance to talk to Holly Fike, Carolines Coffee Roaster’s Manager, about the history of the shop and the strong family connection.  Carolines Coffee Roasters “originally started selling coffee because the family saw a niche market for small batch, fresh coffee, and bought a coffee roaster.  The family at that time would have been Caroline, her husband Chuck who had recently retired from the Forest Service, and their son Trace (photographed above in the mid 1980’s).  Perhaps the biggest change over time is that as we expanded and this area has grown, we’ve become more and more local and community focused.  We used to sell coffee from Redding to Yosemite, and Trace was on the road all the time.  Now we sell a lot more coffee, but mostly within 30 miles, at least on the wholesale side of things.  We have changed, because there is a need to stay relevant, to stay abreast of what is going on in the coffee world, while staying true to our small town ideals, however, lots of things remain the same.   What hasn’t changed is that we are still sourcing and selling the best coffees in the world.  We have a dual focus on great coffee and great customer service, and we believe that is why we are still in business.  We love what we do, and it shows.”  Holly wants to help kick off their birthday celebrations (click here to see their Facebook page where she promises to have a weekly giveaway) with a giveaway on the Outside Inn’s blog, one lucky InnSide Nevada City reader is going to get a Carolines Coffee Roasters coffee crate.  Please post a comment here wishing Carolines Coffee Roaster happy birthday and I’ll draw the winner on Monday, April 15th.  And the winner from the Olive Vitality giveaway is Kathy Wronksi, and the winner of the Treatsicles are Pam and Kate.

Happy 31st, Carolines! I’ve been buying all of my coffee beans there for over ten years (and more than a few lattés and scones). I bought a couple pounds just this morning. Every time I go in, everyone working there is friendly and cheerful. That says a lot about how the business treats its employees.

I am very grateful of their generosity to our local non-profit community. I’m constantly seeing them thanked in programs and on posters.
