Mardi Gras
Nevada City’s annual Mardi Gras celebration is coming back to town. Mark your calendar for Sunday, February 27. The event, hosted by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, features a colorful, festive parade & street faire from 12-4pm with vendors selling food & drinks. The parade starts at 2pm on Broad Street.
“After a rough couple of years, we’re so excited to bring energy and enthusiasm back to Nevada City,” says event organizer, Lynn Skrukrud, “The Mardi Gras parade is a fun, festive, and light-hearted event for the whole family to enjoy.” New this year, spectators will be able to get their groove on with a special performance by the Earles of Newtown, a New Orleans style jazz-funk band. The Earles will play from the balcony of the Kidd Knox building located at the corner of Broad & Pine Streets immediately prior to the start of the parade.
This year the Mardi Gras Parade has selected the following individuals for their positive impact on our community.
- 2022 Grand Marshal Joan Phillipe
- 2022 King & Queen are Erin & Dan Thiem
- 2022 Grand Duke and Grand Duchess are Johnny Thorne and Arianna Thorne
In previous years the parade has included Samba Drop, NEO, Curious Forge, Claude the fire-breathing dragon, Merry Widow Society, Grass Valley Jazzercise, 49er Rotary, to name a few. I love seeing the festive masks, bright beads and watching people enjoying the beautiful afternoon. While the weather has been dry lately, just remember that the event is a rain or shine event, so grab your beads and head to downtown Nevada City next Sunday afternoon.
