Mountain Bounty CSA
The 2012 summer season at Mountain Bounty Farm kicked off this week with a box full of fabulous fresh goodies including zucchini, butter lettuce, carrots and more. The local North San Juan farm is celebrating their 15th season and excited to have expanded their drop off points to include Reno, Truckee and South Lake Tahoe (plus Nevada City & Grass Valley). Sign up online, new subscribers welcome throughout the season if space available. I’ve included a few photos from last year’s CSA to get you in the spirit. This week’s giveaway is a one week veggie share from Mountain Bounty. Please post a comment below about your favorite veggie and I’ll draw a winner on Monday, June 4th. Please note that giveaway is not available to current Mountain Bounty subscribers and must be picked up in Nevada City or Grass Valley before August 1st, 2012. The winner of the 2 tickets to Next To Normal at the Nevada Theatre is Laurie Cerruti.

FUN FACTS ABOUT VEGS
*Most of the nutrients in a potato reside just below the skin layer.
*California produces almost all of the broccoli sold in the United States.
*Yams and sweet potatoes are not the same thing!
*Actually a fruit, it took a ruling by the Supreme Court in 1893 to make the tomato a vegetable.
*Frozen veggies will contain more nutrients than most store bought veggies that travel miles and ripen on the road, another reason to buy local
*Peanuts are not nuts, they are part of the pea family
*Pumpkins are not a vegetable, they are a fruit. So are avocados
*Tomatoes were once considered a type of apple by France and Italy and used to be yellow, not orange or red.
Green beans sauteed in a little butter are my favorite!

Oh, dear… I suppose it’s a perfect tomato, can’t resist it sliced on a fried-egg sandwich with mayonnaise like my mama makes. Yum.
Going to make one right now…
Love kale! I make kale chips a couple times a week with my dehydrater. Make cashew butter adding nutritional yeast, lemon juice, red pepper. Mix with kale and dehydrate. The best snack!
These all look scrumptious! My favorite veggie…. fresh, sweet corn on the cob.
