Nevada City Chinese Lunar New Year Festival

Chinese Lunar New Year

The Nevada City Chinese Lunar New Year Festival welcome the Year of the Monkey.  The fifth annual celebration was organized by CATS (Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra), honoring the early Chinese pioneers of the Sierra Foothills.  “The Festival producers today are pleased to revitalize this tradition and honor the early inhabitants of the old Chinese Quarter,” says Jeannie Wood.  The community parade began at the Chinese Monument on Commercial Street (the old Chinese Quarter), led by ceremonial Lion Dancers and a 72’ Chinese Dragon from Eastern Ways Martial Arts of Sacramento.  The mini-parade entourage of community entries came down Commercial Street and ended at the Robinson Plaza where the Lion Dancers and Dragon performed. Participants included a Rickshaw pulled by Richard Yue of the Auburn Joss House, Grass Valley Taiko, Ka Hale Hula O Pilialohaokalani O Hilo Grass Valley, Xiao Mao (Little CATS) Asian Culture Club, Chinese Classical Dancer Lily Zhu, martial artists from Body Balance and world music by Michael Martino and World Beatnix.  Thanks CATS for the family friendly event.  The Inn Town Campground was a sponsor of today’s event and we’re excited that when we open the campground this summer we will be able to provide the community with greater access to the historic Chinese cemetery, plus provide information for visitors and locals about the Chinese pioneers.
