Nevada City Film Festival

Nevada City, CA, is home to the “Sundance of the Sierra” also known to locals as the Nevada City Film Festival! From August 26th-28th the Nevada City Film Festival makes art into a party, bringing emerging and top independent filmmakers showcasing award-winning short and feature-length films from around the world to this beautiful historic town in the Sierra Foothills.

Since 2001, the Nevada City Film Festival (NCFF) has brought top independent film, music and comedy, along with attracting thousands of attendees, international filmmakers, and industry guests to the historic town of Nevada City, California. Nevada City is known for its sophisticated and supportive arts and cultural scene, and makes screening a film here a positive, encouraging and exciting experience.

NCFF is often referred to as the “Sundance of the Sierra” for its emphasis on fiercely independent cinema that showcases innovative, progressive and exciting new voices in film. In 2019, NCFF was named for the second time by Moviemaker Magazine as one of the top 50 film festivals in the world worth the submission fee for filmmakers. In 2020, NCFF was named by USA Today as the #3 Best Festival in the US.

Every summer, NCFF makes art into a party, bringing an audience of movie lovers together with emerging and top independent filmmakers.  The festival has adapted to the realities of COVID over the last 2 years, including a series of drive-in movie theatres, online festival, organized a free youth online animation camp for 70 students, and raised $5,000k for local non-profits – Bright Futures for Youth, Neighborhood Center for the Arts, Bear Yuba Land Trust, Nisenan Tribe and the Nevada County Arts Artist Relief Fund.

“We learned a lot in the last two years. This year’s festival is a celebratory blend of indoor and outdoor events, featuring inspiring, joyful, intensely beautiful, and heartfelt expressions of the human experience,” said Jesse Locks, NCFF executive director. “Of course, NCFF wouldn’t be the same without some wild and whacky visual treats too.”

This year’s feature films check all the boxes of what an independent film festival should encompass; from promising debuts by emerging directors to seasoned industry favorites taking creative risks to tell new and exciting stories, and everything in between.  For a look at the first round of selected films check out the Nevada City Film Festival’s website.  Early bird season pass tickets on sale now, but act quick, because the the special pricing ends soon.  And don’t forget the super awesome win a trip Nevada City getaway the film festival has organized, an amazing opportunity to experience Nevada City and enjoy the festival.
