Nevada County Reads
Nevada County Reads & Writes has selected Andy Mulligan’s novel Trash as the annual community reading book. The young adult fiction explores issues of corruption, poverty, waste, excess, and social justice by following three young boys who discover a bag in a dumpster. You can check out a copy of the book at one of the local libraries or purchase it at The Book Seller or Harmony Books, both shops are offering a special 10% off discount if you pick up a copy this month. Local author Kim Culbertson helped explain why a young adult book is a good choice for this event, “A YA novel broadens the potential to have multiple generations share in the experience, to have more of the county represented in the process.” February 26th the winners of the writing contest will be announced at Off Center Stage in Grass Valley. But mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 11th for the Trash Community Event will be held at the Foothills Events Center from 5:30-7:00 PM. Haute Trash, a troupe of artists who create haute couture out of society’s trash, will present a fashion show designed from all recycled materials as well as local non profits who want to chat about local volunteering opportunities. Thank you Nevada County Libraries and the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools for organizing this great event, time to get reading. And the winner of the Valentine’s Day giveaway is Meshawn.

The annual Nevada County reads program is always an interesting series of events. The books are always thought provoking and the committee usually puts together fabulous events that either are directly related to the book or are associated with the topic. A great chance for everyone to read and talk about the same book.
