Sierra Stages, The Producers
Sierra Stages new production of The Producers opens this week at the historic Nevada Theatre in downtown Nevada City. The humorous musical comedy based on the movie by Mel Brooks shows a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his accountant trying to make money producing a musical flop. The ensemble cast includes Robert Rossman and Danny McCammon as Max Bialystock and Leopold Bloom.
“I think the community will love it,” said Director Susan Mason. “It’s very funny, from the first note to the last. It’s a comedy, but also a homage to Broadway. So if you’re a Broadway nerd, you can pick out numbers that are tributes to “Show Boat,” “My Fair Lady,” “West Side Story’,” she said. “You can catch-all of this stuff, it’s like a Where’s Waldo? kind of thing where you can see and hear all of these little things; like the tap dancing tribute to Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. Mel Brooks went berserk in that way.”
