Stay home
I wrote a blog post last week on how we can support local businesses and it seems like the entire world has turned upside down since then. It’s amazing to think how much our lives have changed in just a short period of time.
One of my job descriptions is to be the “Nevada County Ambassador”. In that role, I’ve put a lot of time and energy in the last decade to promoting our community. As an ambassador for Grass Valley and Nevada City, I feel almost a loss of words on how I can help in this situation, other than the obvious of just staying home. So, Dan and I have spent the better part of our last week trying to figure out what our role in the community is now. It is clear that as businesses who welcome travelers to our area, the Outside Inn & the Inn Town Campground have a grave moral responsibility to do our part to stop COVID-19 and ensure the health and wellbeing of others.
To that end, we are only hosting people who require lodging for sheltering in place or some other essential need. Many of you will know how hard it is to turn down a paying customer right now, but we are doing so daily in an effort to discourage travelers from unnecessarily spreading coronavirus. We have to be part of the solution for the health of our community and businesses.
Having said all of that, there are still people out there with essential lodging needs and we have been happy to host them responsibly. During the storms last week, there were many in the area who lost power and it felt good to be there to offer a warm place for them to stay, even when the rest of the world seems to be shut down.
Since there are some things don’t stop even for a pandemic, we are able to offer these essential services at the Inn Town Campground: dump station, propane filling station, parking for stranded full-time RVers and traveling essential services staff. We have modified our operations to accommodate these services and social distancing, so please call ahead if you need them.
Finally, because I want to end on a positive note, here are 5 things that brought me joy in the last week:
- Virtual check ins with loved ones and friends.
- Spring flowers.
- A walk around the block while maintaining 6′ from anyone we happened to see (but smiling and saying hello to every single one of them).
- Being able to offer compassion and understanding to those who needed it (from the bride who cancelled her wedding, to the locals without power who were living in their home without heat and power, to the grandpa who came to meet his grandchild and now doesn’t know when he’ll be going home.
- Knowing that we’re all in this together; while it’s hard to basically close down all your services for the greater good, I know that we all have to do our part and we’re willing to be a part of that solution.
I am going to continue to try to share joy on a daily basis, so you can follow along our Instagram accounts (Outside Inn/Inn Town Campground/Visit Nevada City) to see my creative ways to try to stay positive.
Gorgeous photo and great idea to check in often. Thanks for the suggestions about what brings you joy. For me, it is getting outside into the garden, touching the earth, plants and trees and going for walks as well. Also, staying in touch with loved ones.
Thanks for sharing, I have a gratitude challenge this month and it’s helped me actively share things I’m grateful for (which was a good challenge this month considering the state of things at the moment).
Thank you so much for all you guys have done and continue to do for our community! Love your positive attitude!
Trying to keep it positive… (not succeeding 100%).
Erin, Thank you for all the positive inspiration!
Trying…. that counts, right?
Thank you for everything you do for the county,
Thanks, it’ll be interesting to see how our community comes back from this…. it’s going to be a different landscape for many, us included.
Many thanks for all you do. Sending love and light. Stay safe and well.
Thanks Dana, thinking of you guys up the hill.
Thanks Erin – you are a gem.

It’s not easy my friend….
I have no idea if we are allowed to travel? There is nothing on the CDC website about “local travel” and if its okay to stay at a hotel? Or a glamping spot for instance. I understand you are closed (except for those who are in need), are hotels closed across the board? I guess I have to check. Obviously, if we were to make a weekend stay somewhere, we would social distance ourselves. We have always practiced that anyways lol!
Hi Darin– the governor issues a state wide shelter in place, which essentially is the instruction to stay home. Are all the hotels closed? No, I’m sure there are others that are like us and providing essential accommodation to people in need, but no recreational weekends away for the time being.
I found this from Weekend Sherpa……. Well, can you get outdoors? From what we understand going on a hike by yourself, or with just a few people while being sure to adhere to social distancing, is okay. And staying local in your county. So we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite easy hikes and bike rides around Southern and Northern California. Please be sure to follow all updates and advice from health and government authorities. We’ll get through this—be safe, healthy, and kind!…….
“From what we understand” is the conundrum. And “staying local in your county” I have not read from the CDC, but, we will adhere to this and NOT travel to stay for a weekend, but, as best as the state is doing, there really is no definitive answer in my opinion. I am not blaming the state or Newsome for this, with all that they have on their plate. Best wishes to you and ALL of the travel industry.
Wow, Erin. That’s a brave and thoughtful move with love for your community. Your family is always inspiring. Can’t wait to have leisure travel time again, but until then, it will be brave and unprecedented moves from each of us that will get us through this. Thank you.
We look forward to having you… but I liked your FB post on the virtual dinner party.. love that idea.
Thank you, Erin and Dan (and boys) , for being responsible and helping our community in all the ways you do on a daily basis. Continue to find joy!❤️
Thanks for all you do for the good of the community!
Thanks.. plenty of crafting in my world at the moment.
My family (well, one of my families—long story) did a Group FaceTime for the first time ever Sunday morning. We have another scheduled for cocktail hour on Wednesday. We’re going to start setting them up with friends, too.
Good to hear!!!
Thank you for making some hard and important decisions for the good of the community.
Thanks Roseann, turns out the state and county have clarified that these are required, so we were just a tiny bit ahead of the curve, but on the right path.
So appreciate what you both do for the community…Your posts and pictures are always great.
