Sand Mandala, Grass Valley The Sacred Earth and Healing Arts of Tibet Tour with the Buddhist Monks of the Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery have returned to St. Joseph’s Cultural Center in Grass Valley for the 15th year.  The Tibetan Monks have been working on their elaborate sand mandala, all visitors are welcome to stop by and witness the art.  The colorful sands are used, one color at a time, with specially designed copper instruments, to create figures, flower, animal, and esoteric symbols.  While there have already been a number of events this month, there is still time to listen to a lecture, blessing or the closing ceremony (Saturday, Jan 30th, 7pm).  If you have kids, check out the children’s program on Saturday morning program with Buddhist coloring books, coloring mandals, and Tibetan Calligraphy, reserving in advance is recommended.  For a complete list of events click here. At the closing ceremony for the sand mandala there will be a blessing and the sand will be swept up and given as gifts to local communities members and then returned to creeks.  Thank you Sierra Friends of Tibet for welcoming the monks to our community and providing locals and visitors an opportunity to witness the creation of the sand mandala.
