4th of July Activities

Who’s ready for 4th of July?  If you’re looking for a great family friendly option check out the Music in the Mountains SummerFest Patriotic Pops on Tuesday, July 3rd at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.  The MIM Chorus and 65-piece Orchestra all come together in this rousing patriotic program to perform some of the greatest works of patriotic music including the finale of Randall Thompson’s Testament of Freedom, Gershwin’s Land of Mine, America, John Williams’ Superman March, James Horner’s Apollo 13, and John Phillip Sousa’s iconic songs Semper Fidelis March, Washington Post March and Stars and Stripes Forever.

The 4th of July parade will be in Nevada City this year, starting at 11am.  The Nevada County Fourth of July parade is co-sponsored by the Greater Grass Valley Chamber and Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and the Grass Valley Downtown Association.  You can arrive early in downtown Nevada City and hear the Nevada County Concert Band performance at 10am or you go later and watch the fireworks at Nevada County Fairgrounds, gates open at 3pm and the entertainment starts at 4pm.  Maybe your plans include a BBQ with goodies from BriarPatch, a picnic to go from Backporch Market or a cheese platter from Wheyward Girls Creamery.  Or maybe you’ll go play outside, stay cool, it’s going to be a warm weekend, maybe a refreshing dip in Scotts Flat Lake or swim in the South Yuba River.  We’ve been having a blast welcoming campers at the Inn Town Campground.  And because you know I love giveaways….  post a comment here with your holiday plans and one lucky winner will win 4 tickets to the Music in the Mountains Patriotic Pops concert (kids are free) and a cheese platter from Wheyward Girls Creamery worth $50.  Winner will be announced on Sunday, July 1st.  *Edited to say the winner is Carla.

Can you believe I have never been to the parade or the fairgrounds for the 4th? Now is the time… a cheese platter and a concert the day before would be nice too 🙂

We aren’t sure yet. We might hang out with family coming into town that day, or we might try to make the Patriotic Pops concert (ooh, pick me, pick me!), or we might have a BBQ with friends.

    Thanks, Erin!

Nothing quite like kicking off the 4th of July celebrations the night before. We would certainly enjoy the tickets to the Patriotic Pops concert and the cheese platter! Spending the 4th with family and friends, most likely BBQing by our pool.

We love the 4th. Our little one is almost 2, so we are still working on our family 4th traditions. Last year, we went to the fireworks, which was so enjoyable. We saw the concert a couple of years ago and loved it, so want to make this part of the tradition as well. Sharing the festivities with visiting friends was the icing on the cake. Everyone is always so impressed with our “little town.”

My daughter and I live in Grass Valley but head back to the Midwest for a Tourette Syndrome camp this time each year. Because of this we have not been to the fairgrounds for 3 years. This year we decided to fly instead of driving cross country. We will be back to enjoy all the festivities. We can’t wait to be back for the holidays in G V. The concert and cheese would be awesome.
