Ski/Snowboard in the Sierras
Ski season is coming! Are you ready? I know we’re all enjoying the amazing fall weather, but really, it’s not too early to start gearing up for the upcoming winter. With a number of world-class ski resorts just up the hill from Nevada City (Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Royal Gorge, Northstar, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows) there are a lot of great opportunities to play in the snow, whether you ski, snowboard, cross-country ski or just want to go sledding. The InnSide Nevada City blog has put together a great pre-ski season giveaway package to get you excited for the upcoming winter. To get the legs in shape we’ve got one spot in the upcoming South Yuba Club’s Ski Conditioning workout series, which starts the week of November 4th. We’ve also got 2 tickets to Sugar Bowl Ski Resort*, and remember if you’re going to buy a season pass this year the early season rates ends on November 1st. Check out the new Sugar Bowl pass options this year with tickets at Squaw and Alpine as part of the benefits. Mountain Recreation is offering up a free ski/board tuning. Their pre-season juniors rentals are currently available, get your child equipped for $99. Flowlow Gear has a special 30% off coupon to buy, so stock up on a new pair of ski pants or jacket. Other ways to help pray for snow, go check out the Snowlands Network Backcountry Film Festival at the Nevada Theatre on Tuesday, December 2nd or the Warren Miller “No Turning Back” on Saturday, November 29th at the Dog Baggett Theater as a fundraiser for the NU Ski Team. Thanks to Mountain Recreation for adding 2 tickets to the Warren Miller show to the prize package. So who’s ready for winter? Post a comment on this blog post about your favorite winter activity and I’ll draw the winner on Halloween. And many, many thanks for all your support on the future Inn Town Campground, we’ll dream about summer camping soon enough!

Praying for snow. Maybe I’ll make a snow altar at this year’s altar show!
You crack me up, your altar might melt.
Favorite winter activity…. drinking egg not lattes from Caroline’s and warming up by the fireplace with a good book (fuzzy socks are required for this activity)
Let it Snow!!!!! My favorite winter activity is drinking wine and cooking all day. There’s nothing better than eating a hearty meal while the snow is coming down!
Cheers!
My fingers are crossed for lots of snow this year! I enjoy driving up highway 20 to cross country ski at the omega rest stop.
The Omega Rest stop is where we send our guests who want to go play in the snow, great options for folks looking for some free outdoor snow fun.
Heck yes!!! SNOW!!! I can hardly contain myself..Hope the snow gods smile on us this winter.
Oh and my favorite winter activity has to be forecasting reporting the snowy weather!!
We’ve been doing snow dances since Sept 1 and bargaining with the gods for a great season.
Our go to has always been boarding in the fresh stuff, but we’ll take shoeing or x-country as well. And now with the littles we can’t pass up a good sledding hill, but let’s be honest, we couldn’t pre-kids either. Can you tell we’re dreaming in white 🙂
Thanks! So glad you found your way via Instagram, we’ll all do the snow dance!
my favorite wintertime activity is snowboarding but since the last few winters have been pretty weak I’d have to say it’s spending more time in the kitchen making soups and baking breads
Well maybe this winter you can do both?
Snow shoeing with friends, taking photos that look like the need to be on a Christmas card, then followed by a nice hearty meal and hot chocolate 🙂
Sounds like a perfect winter day to me (and of course taking photos often makes me to do list!).
Snow is the best when viewed from a far. I’m hoping for tons of snow in the mountains that I can admire.
Ingrid, you make me smile… you don’t have to be a snow bunny, I accept.
Skiing!! I live for it! I get giddy at the first prospect of snow. I look forward to my first day on the mountain with anticipation of a young child. Looking forward to some turns with my friend at the Outside Inn this year and seeing how great her two boys are improving on the mountain. They memorize the trail names and challenge themselves to the next level. Inspiring to see young budding skiers. Hopefully this year I will get to introduce my niece to this awesome activity.
Yeah!!!
I think this will be the year that my three-year-old learned to ski!
Oh what fun! Before you know your family of 5 will all be on a backcountry hut trip on their own skis! (We bought tele gear for our boys!).
Hmm…I think cutting down our Christmas tree and eating pie! Looking forward to some winter weather and snow.
Pie… I like the way you think 🙂
I’m dreaming of snowy days with levels below 2500 feet so that we can ski right out the front door. Excited also to head to the mountains for many fresh powder days!
Wait, isn’t that why we live in Nevada City, so we don’t have snow out our front door? I’m sure your kids will enjoy time on the slopes this year.
so excited for a snowy winter! i love the sunny ski days…cuddles by the fire watching it snow…searching for the perfectly imperfect christmas tree down long mountain roads…seeing nevada city quiet morning snowy streets! too many loves to count!
Outside Inn, you guy’s are awesome!
I love what you are doing for our community.
Hoping for lots of snow this year!
Making angels in the snow and sitting in front of a crackling fire and warming up after having made said snow angels.
Best winter activity – being outside in the snow. Skiing with friends. Making snow forts. Skating. Sledding. Now I need to go find my mittens!
Best winter activity: Sugar Bowl on a weekday! Watching the kids beat dad down the hill! Trail runs on the local trails in the puddles…and a warm cup of coffee!
watching the fire burn in the woodstove. After skiing.
Since we’re relatively new to the area we love exploring the mountains on snowshoes. We’ve headed out off 80 & on Pioneer Trail from White Cloud. We know there’s tons more exploring to do & we’re super excited. And we used to snowboard when we could afford it. 😉
Snowshoeing is great- and surprisingly hard work. Yeah for snow fun, lots to explore in our area.
What kind of ball doesn’t bounce…
A snowball!
Oh Dave, what would we do without you and your comic relief. Just don’t get too light headed.
I love how quiet it becomes when it snows! I love a fire in the stove and a pot of soup simmering, while I enjoy a good read or knitting project.
My favorite outdoor activity is snowshoeing, it’s so peaceful. Of course I always love a great day of downhill skiing, it’s great seeing so many people having fun on the slopes.
I like snow and lots of it.. Hopefully Mother nature will help us all out this winter and bring us lots of snow or rain!!
Well, we’ll work on those ski legs in the mean time and when she blesses us with snow we’ll both be ready. Perhaps we’ll see you at the Backcountry Film Festival again this year?
Really hope we get lots of snow this year! Our kiddos are ready to try skiing for the first time. Sugarbowl is probably a great location for that!
I love that you can do Sugar Bowl as an afternoon activity from Nevada City.
Love to ride share some time.
Another favorite winter/year round activity…. pinning pix on Pinterest of cozy hot toddy recipes.
D thinks j and I will be in the same ski lesson class (I try skiing every other year or so), so skiing is probably out for my fave winter activity. So I have to say making snow angels, then quickly warming up inside!
I love that you keep trying it, who knows maybe when you turn 40 something will click and you’ll become a pro skier?
I love watching my kids sled. It may take about a half an hour to get them dressed and ready in their snow clothes, and even though they only usually last maybe 20 minutes, it is so fun to watch them.
Re-invented mountain girl-from board to skis and now I’ve outgrown my beginner stix, need a new pair!! I must keep up with kiddo!
I can’t wait to hit the slopes this year in my new home of Nevada County. I have been waiting all year to go! Stoked is all I can say!
Favorite winter activities include sipping hot chocolate and curling up with a good book, going on a walk in the snow and marveling at how the neighborhood has been transformed, and spending a whole day skiing followed by an evening sitting by a fire at home.
Favorite activity would be photo and video in the snow with grandkids on skis and sleds. And then Fondue with sour dough French bread afterwards.
Ah winter, I can’t wait for the white slopes, step chutes, the snow drifting through the trees. And let us not forget those amazing traffic jams on I-80!
I love skiing! To me it feel like I am flying. Didn’t get to go last year. It is a must this year! Instead of a Snow Dance, we should all do the Winter Wiggle….trying to get in your snow pants. Let it snow 🙂
love those ski photos – let it snow!
Thanks!!!
We are so lucky to live next to such sports!
Agreed! Can you count breathing winter air as part of your job research?
Time to dust off the rock skis. All hail to Ullr!
favorite winter activity: skiing with the family!
Yeah! I’m sure the little ones will be racing down the hill soon enough.
Dear Snow Queen,
Please let this be THE year that the littles want to learn to ski. The old folks in the house are itching to get back on the slopes after a long hiatus.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Cannot wait for this snow season. Time to wax the snowboard and pray for snow
Wax helps… but snow would be best. Who knows, it’s a nice storm?
The sound & smell of rain ; & the quiet of snow; & on the flip side, IF we’re lucky enough to get snow, the sound of glee from my son sledding.
Sounds of glee, that made me smile. Thanks for playing along, winner was announced yesterday, but we can all benefit from the sounds & smell of rain and snow 🙂
