South Pine Cafe, photos by Erin Thiem

Who’s hungry?  There are a number of great choices in Nevada City for breakfast and lunch, but our family decided to go visit the South Pine Cafe in Grass Valley for a change of pace.  Both locations offer the same great menu, whether you’re in the mood for Lobster Benedict or the Spicy Jamaican Tofu.  The favorite breakfast choice for the younger crew half of our party is always the mousecakes, pancakes decorated to look like a mouse.  The South Pine Cafe in Grass Valley is located on Richardson Street, open 8am to 3pm every day of the week.  The expanded Grass Valley kitchen is faster and the redesigned entry has more seating options.  Or you can always stick to the Nevada City restaurant, located on South Pine Street.  But make sure you’re hungry, because who can resist ollaliberry pancakes or a carne asado burrito?  Congrats to George & Suzie for their 20th year in business, South Pine Cafe in Nevada City opened in July, 1996.  To celebrate the Outside Inn’s blog has a $25 gift certificate to give away, post a comment on the blog about why you love South Pine (Nevada City or Grass Valley) and I’ll draw the winner on Friday, February 26th.

Love, love the egg dishes that are topped with a dollop of their yummy, rich homemade pesto. And there are few things better than starting a weekend morning off with a mimosa that’s made with fresh squeezed orange juice!
Wonderful place to gather with friends and family.

I love South Pine because not only is the food excellent, the staff is the best! We’re regulars at the GV location. They always sit us at “our” table and bring coffee and water without even needing to ask. Christine even remembers my wacky food allergy to keep me safe. They’re our little breakfast community within our larger community. South Pine rocks!

This was the first restaurant my husband and I went to when we moved up to Grass Valley….had the BEST mimosa! And the food is delish too.

Before moving. To Nevada City, I would come up here to ride my mountain bike. South Pine is the perfect post ride lunch! In addition to the delicious lunches, a waitress told me about Treats after I successfully ate everything off my plate.

When my husband and I go to breakfast, we almost always choose the Nevada City location of South Pine Cafe. We love the service, the ambiance, the artwork, the habinero salsa, and the menu!!! I love the nut burger with salad and house dressing. It really is divine!!! Congratulations on your success there and thank you for being available to me, whenever I need a food pick-me-up!!

We recently discovered the South Pine Cafe and took family there. We were not disappointed. We all had different menu items and we were all raving about our selections. We have been back and were not disappointed on our second trip. These little gems are what small town living is all about. How lucky can we get.

Big fan of the eggs ben. … and the portabella scramble. Most of all just love the vibe (mainly go to Nevada City cafe) and people who work there! Jeez, been way too long since I have been there in fact!

The mousecakes are a hit with my kiddo, too! But my fave item is the nut burger — what an inspired & unique menu item. In fact, last summer while camping in Yosemite, we randomly overheard some people from SoCal talking about the South Pine nut burger — and specifically how cool Nevada City is because of it.

I love South Pine Cafe because the ingredients of everything on the menu is fresh and delicious and the vibe of the restaurant itself is very comfortable. I am particularly fond of the spicy mexican chicken scramble. This is my go-to breakfast place in Nevada City/Grass Valley and I love taking friends who have never been there before and introducing them to the amazingness that is South Pine.

We’re regulars at the Nevada City location. My kids love watching the cooks while we wait for a table. While breakfast is awesome, I have also found myself holding business meetings there in the afternoon. My fav is the Blackstone benedict, my hubby loves the Super Sampler and my kids all go for the ollaberry pancakes. Delish!

We have always gone to South Pine in GV, my husband’s great grandmother used to run a boardinghouse next door and I love to listen to the stories about that time period. Everyone in the family has a favorite and visiting relatives always suggest we have breakfast at South Pine Cafe.

I’ve never tried anything that wasn’t delicious at South Pine. I love the fact that the catsup and jam is homemade, there are healthy and hearty options, and of course, that I don’t have to cook but can have healthy-home-style real-good-food. Oh, and the staff are always great! Yummy.

I have to say it we only had one restaurant in Nevada City and it was South Pine café, I’d be happy. I love their scrambles. They do make the absolute best restaurant pancakes and I am so grateful they have real maple syrup to go with them. I have never had anything I didn’t like there.

Great place to eat, I tell all of the musicians who perform at The Center for the Arts to go eat there. I love their sandwiches, Eggs Benedict, and every other thing I’ve eaten there. Love the staff at the Grass Valley location……so friendly. Eat there almost every weekend. Start off with a mimosa (favorite is blood orange) and then a portabella scramble. Everything is so fresh. Love South Pine. I work at a local wine bar and when customers ask about places to eat South Pine is top of my list.

I love the South Pine for breakfast. It’s a great “meet up” place in Nevada City. Great food, great service and after my potato and egg meal I walk across the street to Fur Traders and proceed to shop the streets of N.C. Now that’s a super day!!

We discovered South Pine the first time we stayed at Creekside Hideaway, and now it’s our go-to breakfast place when in Nevada City. We’ve never had a meal there we didn’t like, but I can’t believe no one else has commented on their fresh squeezed orange juice! My husband loves it, and holds it as the ‘gold standard’ against all other orange juice when we have breakfast out. We travel a fair amount, and orange juice is always on his breakfast list. No other place has managed to match, much less surpass, his favorite – from South Pine! We come up for a few days each year, and that’s something we can’t miss! We’ll be in town in a few weeks,, and he’s already been talking about South Pine!

Discovered South Pine Cafe (GV locale is my favorite) my first month in town, and because of how consistently good it is – seasonal and delicious – it’s my go to place to take visitors to. Once they’ve tried the pancakes, green juice or breakfast burrito – they’re sold on NC/GV 🙂
