South Pine Cafe
Who’s hungry? There are a number of great choices in Nevada City for breakfast and lunch, but our family decided to go visit the South Pine Cafe in Grass Valley for a change of pace. Both locations offer the same great menu, whether you’re in the mood for Lobster Benedict or the Spicy Jamaican Tofu. The favorite breakfast choice for the younger crew half of our party is always the mousecakes, pancakes decorated to look like a mouse. The South Pine Cafe in Grass Valley is located on Richardson Street, open 8am to 3pm every day of the week. The expanded Grass Valley kitchen is faster and the redesigned entry has more seating options. Or you can always stick to the Nevada City restaurant, located on South Pine Street. But make sure you’re hungry, because who can resist ollaliberry pancakes or a carne asado burrito? Congrats to George & Suzie for their 20th year in business, South Pine Cafe in Nevada City opened in July, 1996. To celebrate the Outside Inn’s blog has a $25 gift certificate to give away, post a comment on the blog about why you love South Pine (Nevada City or Grass Valley) and I’ll draw the winner on Friday, February 26th.

Love, love the egg dishes that are topped with a dollop of their yummy, rich homemade pesto. And there are few things better than starting a weekend morning off with a mimosa that’s made with fresh squeezed orange juice!
Wonderful place to gather with friends and family.
Fresh squeezed juices and delicious eggs Benedict!!! Love love love south pine
Lobster scramble!!!
Love the Huevos Rancheros
I love South Pine because not only is the food excellent, the staff is the best! We’re regulars at the GV location. They always sit us at “our” table and bring coffee and water without even needing to ask. Christine even remembers my wacky food allergy to keep me safe. They’re our little breakfast community within our larger community. South Pine rocks!
Good location, super friendly staff and yummy food…….a great combo!
This was the first restaurant my husband and I went to when we moved up to Grass Valley….had the BEST mimosa! And the food is delish too.
Before moving. To Nevada City, I would come up here to ride my mountain bike. South Pine is the perfect post ride lunch! In addition to the delicious lunches, a waitress told me about Treats after I successfully ate everything off my plate.
Oh my goodness! I love to eat the potato boat! Who can resist fresh steamed veggies on sautéed potatoes? Good for breakfast or lunch!
The other day I had Thai tofu for breakfast and I was offered toast or muffin … And homemade ketchup, freshly squeezed juice. It was my first time at this cafe… I have been impressed like that in a long time!!! Ps it’s hard to impress me since I am vegan:-) well done! Great place.
LOVE their muffins ❤️ And everything! Mimosas too!!!
The sandwiches are awesome, but so is everything else!! Never a bad meal at South Pine.
Congrats to South Pine Cafe on 20 years! I love their salads! Their South Pine Salad with chicken is my favorite! I’ve been to both locations, and I’d be thrilled to win a gift certificate!
When my husband and I go to breakfast, we almost always choose the Nevada City location of South Pine Cafe. We love the service, the ambiance, the artwork, the habinero salsa, and the menu!!! I love the nut burger with salad and house dressing. It really is divine!!! Congratulations on your success there and thank you for being available to me, whenever I need a food pick-me-up!!
We recently discovered the South Pine Cafe and took family there. We were not disappointed. We all had different menu items and we were all raving about our selections. We have been back and were not disappointed on our second trip. These little gems are what small town living is all about. How lucky can we get.
I LOVE South Pine! I have enjoyed everything I’ve eaten there and I love that they have vegetarian “sausage” 🙂
Mousecakes! They even make one now with eggs on the side so my mom is happy.
I love their nut burgers if its lunch-time, and their ollalaberry pancakes if its breakfast!
Love the eggs benedict! Also friendly staff, great atmosphere:)
Big fan of the eggs ben. … and the portabella scramble. Most of all just love the vibe (mainly go to Nevada City cafe) and people who work there! Jeez, been way too long since I have been there in fact!
The mousecakes are a hit with my kiddo, too! But my fave item is the nut burger — what an inspired & unique menu item. In fact, last summer while camping in Yosemite, we randomly overheard some people from SoCal talking about the South Pine nut burger — and specifically how cool Nevada City is because of it.
Love the potato pancakes with pesto!
My favorite has always been a tofu scramble with the dollop of homemade, delectable salsa and corn tortillas. After reading the above comments, I think I need to branch out!
South Pine Sampler! And great options for my multiple food allergy kid.
Portabello scramble .. and time with my grandkids.
We love eating at South Pine Cafe because everything is FRESH and selected/prepared with care! The kitchen and the staff never disappoints.
This is the one place to bring everyone and all leave every time with happy hearts and bellies!
Aww, this is my very favorite breakfast place. Whenever my husband gets tired of cooking breakfast for me, we take a little stroll downtown (Nevada City) for a South Pine breakfast. Always a treat! Love the atmosphere. Love the food. Love the people.
I wasn’t hungry, but I am now! Besides the great food (still missing the Spanish scramble though), my favorite is the Sunday morning crowd. Staff is friendly and you always get to see some friends.
I love South Pine Cafe because the ingredients of everything on the menu is fresh and delicious and the vibe of the restaurant itself is very comfortable. I am particularly fond of the spicy mexican chicken scramble. This is my go-to breakfast place in Nevada City/Grass Valley and I love taking friends who have never been there before and introducing them to the amazingness that is South Pine.
YES! Love, love, love the lobster scramble and lobster benie.
It’s a crowd favorite.
We’re regulars at the Nevada City location. My kids love watching the cooks while we wait for a table. While breakfast is awesome, I have also found myself holding business meetings there in the afternoon. My fav is the Blackstone benedict, my hubby loves the Super Sampler and my kids all go for the ollaberry pancakes. Delish!
Thanks for your comment Heidi. I too am a huge fan of the Blackstone Benedict. The Super Sampler must make it on to my list… you’re not the only fan.
We have always gone to South Pine in GV, my husband’s great grandmother used to run a boardinghouse next door and I love to listen to the stories about that time period. Everyone in the family has a favorite and visiting relatives always suggest we have breakfast at South Pine Cafe.
The history in our community never ceases to amaze me, love that your connection goes back generations.
I’ve never tried anything that wasn’t delicious at South Pine. I love the fact that the catsup and jam is homemade, there are healthy and hearty options, and of course, that I don’t have to cook but can have healthy-home-style real-good-food. Oh, and the staff are always great! Yummy.
Love how many people mention the jam and ketchup!
A breakfast destination for years and they’ll even cook favorites for you that used to be on their regular menu.
I wonder how many favorite there are over the last 20 years that they’ve made up on a weekly basis?
I have to say it we only had one restaurant in Nevada City and it was South Pine café, I’d be happy. I love their scrambles. They do make the absolute best restaurant pancakes and I am so grateful they have real maple syrup to go with them. I have never had anything I didn’t like there.
But where we would we go to have dinner if they were the only restaurant open? But pancakes are good, I could eat pancakes all day 🙂
Yum. Love me some South Pine. Great food, excellent service.
Can’t go wrong.
We haven’t been since becoming vegan, but I’d like to give it another whirl!
Sounds like there are vegan options.
That nut burger! Yum!
I knew you’d add a vegetarian option to the mix.
The burgers are the best in town. Burger and a beer on Saturday are great.
Do you have a favorite burger?
Yummy……that picture makes me sooooo hungry.
It made me hungry too!
I love their carrot, orange, ginger juice. So yummy! But more than anything I appreciate how easy it is to adjust menu items for dietary needs. They are wonderful. And the food & service are so good!
Carrot, orange, ginger juice sounds so refreshing.
Love, love, love South Pine! My favorite thing to order is the Lobster scramble. Love their homemade ketchup and jam too!
Great place to eat, I tell all of the musicians who perform at The Center for the Arts to go eat there. I love their sandwiches, Eggs Benedict, and every other thing I’ve eaten there. Plus, both Nevada City & Grass Valley locations have a calm, easy vibe. May they continue for another twenty years!
How come no shout outs for the Micky Mouse pancakes? I know two young guys in Nevada city who won’t go there without ordering those big ears.
Love the staff at the Grass Valley location……so friendly. Eat there almost every weekend. Start off with a mimosa (favorite is blood orange) and then a portabella scramble. Everything is so fresh. Love South Pine. I work at a local wine bar and when customers ask about places to eat South Pine is top of my list.
Always my favorite breakfast go-to place, they have everything from muffins, coffee, fresh juice, full breakfast, and kid-friendly meals. Depending on my mood I might get a mocha, or a mimosa, but you can’t beat the spicy Bloody Marys… They are super tasty!
South Pine in Grass Valley makes the best patty Melt I have ever had and their home made catsup is to good to miss
Muffin of the day all the way!
Love south pine! yum!
South Pine all the way! Loveeee their lobster scramble and lunch menu, so great food!
I love the South Pine for breakfast. It’s a great “meet up” place in Nevada City. Great food, great service and after my potato and egg meal I walk across the street to Fur Traders and proceed to shop the streets of N.C. Now that’s a super day!!
We discovered South Pine the first time we stayed at Creekside Hideaway, and now it’s our go-to breakfast place when in Nevada City. We’ve never had a meal there we didn’t like, but I can’t believe no one else has commented on their fresh squeezed orange juice! My husband loves it, and holds it as the ‘gold standard’ against all other orange juice when we have breakfast out. We travel a fair amount, and orange juice is always on his breakfast list. No other place has managed to match, much less surpass, his favorite – from South Pine! We come up for a few days each year, and that’s something we can’t miss! We’ll be in town in a few weeks,, and he’s already been talking about South Pine!
Discovered South Pine Cafe (GV locale is my favorite) my first month in town, and because of how consistently good it is – seasonal and delicious – it’s my go to place to take visitors to. Once they’ve tried the pancakes, green juice or breakfast burrito – they’re sold on NC/GV 🙂
Their huevos rancheros are my favorite, the ollaliberry muffins and all the great memories….. Breakfasts with my dad when I was back from college, breakfast the morning of my wedding with girlfriends and lots more. Thank you.
You’re making me hungry just thinking of these…. love that you went old school memories. Shall we host an anniversary wedding brunch?
